Peso remained as the currency of Guinea-Bissau from 1975 to 1997 replacing the escudo. But the unstable political state of the country and the civil wars going in the country reshaped the structure of the country which was being followed hence changing the official Guinea-Bissau currency from peso to West African CFA franc.

In 2003, the first banknotes of franc were introduced in 500 franc banknotes, and after some time, the banknotes for 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 franc were also introduced due to the devaluation of the currency. Since then the Guinea-Bissau currency has been the West African CFA franc, and apparently, it seems to be the permanent solution according to the country’s economic growth.
