Since the 13th century, Barbados was inhabited by the Kalinago people who replaced the Amerindians, and in the 15th century, the Spanish navigators visited the island and claimed for the Spanish crown. In 1625, an English ship by the name of Olive Blossoms arrived in Barbados, but it wasn’t until 1627 that the first permanent English settlers arrived on the Island to transform it into an English and later a British colony. In November 1966, Barbados gained independence from the British reign and declared itself a Commonwealth state under the British monarch (Currently Queen Elizabeth II) as head of state.

The country experiences two seasons, one with a higher rate of rainfall known as the wet season which spans from June to November whereas the dry season runs from December to May. The climate of Barbados is regarded as a tropical monsoon climate, and infrequent natural hazards which affect the island include earthquakes, landslips and especially hurricanes during the rainy season.
