Languages in China
China is as broad as it gets in terms of almost everything and same is the case when it comes to languages in China. You will be amazed at hearing the total number of languages spoken in China. It is believed that there are a total of 297 languages in China owing that it is home to almost 56 different ethnic groups.
Official Language in China
The national language in China is believed to be Chinese. It is also known as Standard Mandarin or Modern Standard Mandarin. Out of 1.21 billion people in China, standard Chinese is spoken by 955 million people there. Although standard Chinese is China’s national language only 10% can speak it with fluency and the rest of the country speaks standard Chinese, not that fluently. In China, the standard Chinese is included in the curriculum in the schools for the students to get a better understanding of the language.
Others Languages in China
As of the official point of view, Cantonese is also considered to be China’s official language. English is taken into account as one of the foreign languages with only 10 million speakers across the country. The use of Cantonese had originated from Hong Kong and is widely used in Hong Kong. You can think of Cantonese as a subdivision of Chinese. With such a wide variety of languages spoken in China, it is an astonishing thing to see that the common belief that all the Chinese people hold and the common goal they share among themselves is being followed persistently.
