Languages in Congo
Congo has people from 250 different ethnic groups and it is not unfair to say that almost 250 different languages are spoken in Congo. History of languages in Congo goes way back to its colonial time when Belgian rule was still upon it. At that time French and Dutch were taught in school but slowly with time Dutch was eradicated from Congo.
Official Langage of Congo (French)
With all of this being said, the official language in Congo is French owing to its colonial period in Congo. There are other languages in Congo as well that are spoken by some portion of the people living in this country. Some other languages in Congo include Kikongo. Kikongo is considered to be a national language of Congo that is spoken not by the vast majority but by a specific amount of people living in Congo.
Another Language of Congo (Lingala)
Lingala is another language in Congo that made it's way gradually from the upper Congo river area and has its roots in Congo now. Lingala was given importance because the army enforced it as the official language back in the day when the rule of Mobutu was still going and while Lingala was spoken by the army, Swahili another language was used in the east.
Swahilian Language of Congo
Swahili is spoken in some parts of Congo mostly in the area of Katanga area. So, like any other country, there are a lot of different languages in Congo owing to its wide variety of groups. French is used as a medium for communication by the vast majority.
