Athens, the capital of Greece, is also the birthplace of democracy. Greece has experienced one of the finest and the oldest governmental systems in history. Once the city-state which was run democratic principles became part of monarchies. The democratic principles were different than what we have now in the current Greece Government. An important fact about Greece government is that in ancient times, where Athens was run by democracy, only men had the right to vote because they were considered rational and responsible citizens of the city-state. There have been many transformations in Greece governmental system. There is the transformation from city-state to monarchies to oligarchies and later democracies.

In current Greece, there is a democratic parliamentarian system as Greece Government. There are elections after every five years and government is elected. Government is run by the Prime Minister. There is a cabinet of ministers, deputy ministers and ministers without portfolios are part of the decision-making body. Legislative power is executed by the President and Prime Minister. General elections in Greece are held every four years to form the new Greece government. This is designated time period for the completion of the previous transformations if the government isn’t dissolved earlier because of any cause. The Greek constitution was enforced in 1975. There are 13 administrative divisions in Greece. As for the judicial branch in Greece, there are 56 judges which include court presidents.

Greece has many political parties, from extreme leftist parties to rightist groups. There are also political pressure groups which play an important role in lobbying and pressurizing governments. Many international NGO’s and international IGO’s are also present in Greece.
