History of Bhutan

• The name Bhutan was derived from a Sanskrit word called Bhotant, which means the end of Tibet. However, to the outside world it’s known as Bhutan. Bhutanese refer their country as  the Land of Thunder Dragon. Or Druk Yul, where Druk means Dragon, extends from the predominant Drukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism.
• The early history of Bhutan is steeped in Mythology, therefore it remains obscure. Some structures provide evidence that the region settled in 2000 BC.  As per the legend, Bhutan was ruled by Cooch-Behar King, Sangaldip around 7th century BC. 
• History of kingdom begins from 747 A.D. with Guru Padsambhava, also called Guru Rinpoche, who made a trip from Tibet across mountains while flying on a Tiger’s back. He arrived at Tigers nest in Paro valley. Guru Rinpoche are considered second Buddha. In the ensuing centuries,  a lot many masters preached faith that resulted in full bloom of Buddhism in the middle ages. However sectarian in the start, country eventually was unified under Drukpa Kagyupa Mahayana Buddhism in the 17th century. During next two centuries civil wars broke out and regional governors became more powerful. In the end of 19th century, the governor overcame their rivals, and later was recognized as leader of Bhutan. The governor, Sir Ugyen Wangchuck in the year 1907 were elected as Bhutan’s first king. The country now has a system of Constitutional monarchy.
