Sri Lanka is a home country to people that belong to different backgrounds. Owing to this fact, there are several languages in Sri Lanka which are used for the means of communication. Official Languages of Sri Lanka

With all this being said, the official language spoken in Sri Lanka is Sinhalese and Tamil. The roots of these two languages go beyond the boundaries of Sri Lanka to India and other neighboring countries. Languages in Sri Lanka are greatly influenced by the colonial period of Portugal, the Netherlands, and Britain. Among the two official languages in Sri Lanka that are Sinhalese and Tamil, the language that is spoken by more percent of people is the Sinhala language.

Sinhala is written in Sinhala abugida script which is formed from the Brhami script. In 2016, the percentage of people who speak the Sinhala language was calculated to be approximately 74.9%, which makes the Sinhalese the national language in Sri Lanka. 

Other Languages in Sri Lanka

Apart from Sinhalese and Tamil, other languages that are spoken as a secondary language in Sri Lanka are English and Portuguese. Tamil has become a part of Sri Lanka from the time when the Tamil migrants came from India to Sri Lanka. Among the entire population of Sri Lanka, the total numbers of people who speak Tamil as their primary language are 4.7 percent which is mostly from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
