Languages in Brunei
Every country has a national language, but it doesn’t mean that 100 percent population of that specific country speaks the national language. The minor languages are also spoken in every country. Same is the case with Brunei many languages are used in Brunei by people of various countries. Although the majority of the population comprises of local Muslims people from China, India, Nepal are also residing in Brunei. So, every minority uses different languages in Brunei.
National Language of Brunei
Standard Malay is the national language of Brunei. It is the same language which is used in Malaysia and Indonesia. It is one of the most spoken languages in Brunei. Malay is declared as Brunei national language in the constitution of 1959. Around 85 to 90 percent of people living in Brunei speaks Brunei national language.
Other Languages in Brunei
The other languages in Brunei include English, Chinese with three varieties (Hokkien, Cantonese, and Hakka), Chinese community also uses the Mandarin language in Brunei, Indian people speak Tamil among languages in Brunei. Arabic is used by Islamic scholars. Apart from these languages in Brunei, there are five other minority languages in Brunei, and these are Tutong, Belait, Dusun, Bisaya, and Lun Bawang.
English Language in Brunei
English is also among Brunei official languages as it is widely used by people involved in Business and is also used in schools as a medium of instructions since 1985. Therefore, if you are visiting Brunei and you don’t know about languages in Brunei, but you can speak and understand the English language it is enough.
