Languages in Ghana

Ghana is a country which is multilingual in which about eighty words are spoken in different areas of the country. Of all these, English, which was inherited from the colonial era in the country, is the official language and commonly spoken language.  Of all the words indigenous to Ghana, Akan is the most widely spoken and understood. Ghana has more than seventy ethnic groups in it, each with its distinct language spoken.

Languages in Ghana that are belonging to the same ethnic group are usually mutually intelligible. The Dagbanli and Maumelle languages are of Northern Region, and they are mutually intelligible with the Frafra and Waali languages of the Upper East Region in Ghana. These four languages in Ghana are of Mole-Dagbani ethnicity. Eleven languages in Ghana have the status of sponsored words by the government including four Akan ethnic languages (Akuapem Twi, Asante Twi, Mfantse and Nzema) and two Mole-Dagbani ethnic languages (Dagaare and Dagbanli). The rest of the languages in Ghana are Ewe, Dangme, Ga, Gonja, and Kasem, Hausa.

Official Language in Ghana

The language is spoken widely by all ages. Dagaari and Birifor are intelligible; Dagaari are more prominent languages in Ghana both politically and socially. It is an official literary language spoken in Ghana with Wali. It is different from Northern Dagaar in Burkina Faso. More than 250 languages and dialects are usually spoken widely in Ghana. English is the official languages in Ghana and is used widely in government and business affairs. Moreover, it is also the standard language used for educational institutes as well.
