Languages in Iran
Iran is diverse as far as languages are concerned. This is mainly due to cultural diversity. Various publications have shown different statistics for the language in Iran. There have been limited censuses taken in Iran in 2001, 1991, 1986 and 1949–1954. Following is the language in Iran which are spoken by the greatest number of speakers. Classification categories of the spoken language in Iran are as follows;
- Indo-European (Iranic mostly, small amounts of other branches represented mainly by Armenian amongst the others)
- Turkic (the major being Azerbaijani, with very few amounts of Turkmen, Qashqai, and Afshar)
- Semitic (majorly Arabic, but also Neo-Aramaic, Hebrew, and Mandean)
- Caucasian language (which as Kartvelian, and Circassian)
Official Language in Iran
Although Persian (Farsi) is the main and official language in Iran, some languages from three languages families which are Indo-European, Altaic, and Afro-Asiatic are spoken in Iran. Approximately three-fourths of Iranians are used to speaking one of the Indo-European languages. Slightly greater than half of the population speaks a dialect of Persian, which is an Iranian language of the Indo-Iranian group. Literary Persian, the language’s more refined language, is understood to some extent by most Iranians. Persian is also the most important language of literature, journalism, and sciences. Less than one-tenth of the Iranian population can speak Kurdish. The Lurs and BakhtyÄrÄ« of Iran speak LurÄ«, a language in Iran different from, but they are closely related to the language of Persian. Armenian is a single language of the Indo-European family, which is only spoken by the Armenian minority people.
